Paramedics were dispatched to Ocean Front Walk on Venice Beach around 2:15 p.m. after witnesses reported a tremendous crash of thunder.
“I heard this crackle,” a witness told CBS Los Angeles, “And there was this giant bolt of lightning shooting across the sky and the loudest thunder I’ve ever heard.”
A swimmer who was initially missing in the water was recovered by lifeguards in full cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at Marina Del Rey Hospital. A surfer was in critical condition and eight more people were hospitalized. Four people were treated at the scene and released, according to the Los Angeles Times.
