Light plane crashes during training flight

Two men walked away without serious injury after the light plane they were in nosedived into a paddock in Sydney’s southwest during a training flight.

Police say the plane was conducting training exercises at Bankstown Airport just before 9am (AEST) on Monday when it crashed into the vacant field near Nancy Ellis Leebold Drive in Bankstown.

The aircraft landed upside down and the men, aged 27 and 20, escaped uninjured.

The plane sent out a mayday call shortly before going down.

“We knew about (the emergency) and activated our emergency response plan,” an airport spokeswoman said.

A NSW Police spokesman said the two men were pulled from the wreckage by emergency response officers.

A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said both men were treated for minor injuries at the scene but did not need to go to hospital.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is still to decide whether to look into the crash.

“We’re gathering more information before we decide to investigate,” an ATSB spokesman told AAP.

The airport spokeswoman said the Cessna 152 had seating capacity for a pilot and one passenger.

Cessna’s website states the 152 is a “classic” model which has been “the backbone of flight training for decades”.

The Cessna 152 was produced from 1978 to 1985.
