The German police heightened the security of 11 Bundestag MPs with Turkish origin. The reason is the increase in number of threats and insults against them over the adoption of the Armenian Genocide recognition resolution.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung periodical writes the Berlin police, the police of the Federal Parliament and the Federal Security Service made a decision over this issue at the meeting with the MPs.

The number of police also increased near Cem Ozdemir’s house. As Deutsche Welle reports, German Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Integration Aydan Özoğuz urged the Turkish companies operating in Germany to demonstrate clear stance over the threats against the Turkish MPs. “We expect the Turkish organizations in Germany to openly criticize the threats against the MPs. Everyone must understand that we are committed to our origins, however, without being an extension of Turkey”, Özoğuz said.

In an interview with Bild am Sonntag Sevim Dagdelen, an MP of the Leftist Party, stressed the necessity to ban Erdogan’s entry to Germany. “Anyone in Turkey who calls for violence against members of the German parliament should get an entry ban to Germany. This includes President Erdogan”, she said.

On June 2 the German Bundestag adopted the Armenian Genocide recognition resolution, which is entitled “Remembrance and commemoration of the genocide of Armenians and other Christian minorities in 1915 and 1916”.

Only one MP voted against the adoption, and one abstained.

Speakers were unanimously stressing the need of facing the past, also for contributing the reconciliation between Armenia and Turkey.

The Bundestag voiced the crime of the Ottoman Turkey, and stressed this step is neither an accusation nor a claim, but a tribute to the memory of the victims.
