Thousands of Libyans have staged demonstrations nationwide to express their anger at a plea by the Libyan parliament for foreign military intervention in the country.
The protests came two days after Libya’s newly elected parliament asked the United Nations for a military intervention to protect civilians amid clashes between rival militias.
Thousands of people took to the streets in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, as well as the eastern city of Benghazi, the city of Misrata and a number of others on Friday.
Reports say gunmen attacked demonstrators downtown Tripoli and police responded by opening fire.
“We are protesting to express our complete rejection to any foreign intervention in Libya wanted by the House of Representatives,” said Imad Shanib, one of the Tripoli protest organizers.
Meanwhile, a rival demonstration was held in the city of Benghazi. Participants in the protest showed their support for the parliament’s vote for the intervention.
Nearly three years after the fall of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in a popular uprising in October 2011, Libya is still grappling with rising insecurity as the country has been witnessing numerous clashes between government forces and rival militant groups that refuse to lay down arms despite efforts by the central government to impose law and order.
Bernardino Leon, the new UN special envoy to Libya, is expected to visit Tripoli as early as next week to seek a ceasefire between the rival militias.
