Lib doctor worried about Thomson’s health

A Liberal backbencher who is a qualified doctor is concerned for MP Craig Thomson’s mental health.

Some opposition MPs are fearful the coalition’s relentless attack on Mr Thomson could push him over the edge.

WA Liberal backbencher Dr Mal Washer said Mr Thomson was under immense emotional pressure.

“We don’t want to see someone do something dreadful to themselves,” he told ABC TV.

“There’s a duty of care to look after one another a bit better.”

Dr Washer said combative discourse was part of the nature of politics but behind the scenes both sides should be concerned about each other’s welfare.

“That’s what makes us human,” he said.

He said the opposition saw the Thomson saga as an opportunity to give Labor grief but he warned his colleagues to tread carefully.

Dr Washer said he was concerned about the state of Mr Thomson’s mental health and his potential risk of self-harm as well as the impact on his wife and children.

“He’s under immense pressure. I’m a tough guy but I don’t think I’d be able to handle it,” he said.

On Monday, Mr Thomson gave an hour-long address to parliament responding to allegations against him that he misused union money during his time as head of the Health Services Union.

Mr Thomson broke down during the speech, when he talked about how the controversy was affecting his family.
