The warning comes after the Conservative party took a drubbing in local elections last week. Senior Liberal Democrats have highlighted the need to re-assert the party’s independence from the conservatives, reported the The Telegraph.
“We will have to disengage and we will have to decide whether it is a matter of weeks or months”, the newspaper quoted a Liberal Democrat source as saying.
Furthermore, The Mirror reported that Liberal Democrat deputy leader Simon Hughes accused the Tory party of acting as if they were “born to rule.”
Reports also suggested British Chancellor George Osborne accused Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg of leaking Budget secrets which contained information about his plans for reducing the top rate of tax.
However, Liberal Democrat sources said the party had to inform their MPs about the plans. “I understand why George should be —— off. But George got Nick to take a very big gamble. It had to be explained to our MPs”, The Telegraph quoted one source as saying.
The news comes as Clegg and Prime Minister David Cameron are to publicly renew the Coalition’s “marriage vows” and plead for more time to fix the British economy.
Reports also say that Cameron is to urge rebellious Tory MPs to support him as he pushes ahead with his austerity regime after Conservative MP Nadine Dorries warned that Cameron could be kicked out of office if he does not change his policies.
