Lianne Smith trial: ‘neither child fathered by paedophile partner’

In January, Martin
Smith a former TV psychic and hypnotist, hanged himself in his cell

in Manchester’s Strangeways prison where he was serving 16 years.

The Provincial Court in Girona heard how Mrs Smith was in a “psychotic state”
after he was tracked down and arrested and that she had smothered her
children with a plastic bag “out of love”.

“She believed the children would be taken away from her and
institutionalised. For her this was worse than death,” Itziar Idiaquez
Alberdi, a forensic psychiatrist who interviewed Mrs Smith four times, said
in evidence. “She killed them out of love.”

Another psychiatrist who had treated Mrs Smith while on remand told the court
how she had given her daughter a choice.

“She had asked Rebecca if she would prefer to live a few very happy days
with her mother or a long time without her mother,” Dr Harry Barker
said. Rebecca had replied that she wanted to stay with her mother.

Summing up, prosecutor Victor Pillado Quintas said: “I do not think there
is a more abominable act than ending the life of a small child. “But if
there is something which is even more horrid, more vile, more despicable
than taking the life of a small child, it is that a mother should take the
life of her own small child.”

A jury will retire on Thursday to determine whether Mrs Smith was criminally
responsible for the children’s deaths. She faces a total of 34 years in
prison if found guilty.
