Government and their organised media are shaken by the uncontrolled power and influence of the internet. Their worst nightmare is unstoppable and unbeatable but has one weakness; most people have yet to realise the power at their fingertips.
The internet laptop miraculously transforms ordinary people into correspondents able to reach hundreds of thousands of others. To do so, you hijack the Letters to the Editor page. It is an important page in your newspaper or periodical wherever in the world you are.
Each week your favourite alternative media editor (on this occasion me) advises ‘Letter of the Week’. The perfect letter to the editor is short, to the point, and contains no more than 100 words. Here is an example that you can use to get you started.
Dear Sir / Madam, Concern is expressed at the growing influence of what is described as alternative media. If people turn to internet news to access a wider choice of news availability then traditional print media has only itself to blame.
Mainstream media is criticised for political spin, censorship, and its focus on minority interests at the expense of the ethnic-European communities. Please let us have less bias, censorship and spin if you want your loyal readership back. Yours faithfully:-
Media does not publish anonymous content. Include your name, address and telephone number, otherwise your letter will not be considered. Contact details are never published and I have never heard of them being abused.
Letters to the Editor are rejected, not because of political content, but because they are badly written irrelevant diatribes. The Daily Mail receives about 200 letters each day but has space for about ten; go figure. I had a high success rate even in the Daily Mail. As an editor explained;
your letters are short, relevant, well written and to the point; they don’t involve us in editing; they are print-ready.
Because local and provincial news media receives fewer readers, letters there have a higher chance of being published.
As the readers’ letters page is usually the most popular page, most periodicals welcome letters. Simply re-write the suggested ‘Letter of the Week’ (above) and email it to your choice of periodicals or newspapers. If it is published you can reach tens of thousands of people for a few minutes of your time ~ and mine.
