Let Chinese group seek asylum: opposition

Far from being sent on their way to New Zealand or turned back, a group of Chinese asylum seekers should apply for refuge in Australia, the opposition says.

Coalition border protection spokesman Michael Keenan said the group, believed to be members of the Falun Gong spiritual group, who have fled China because of persecution, included young children and were not particularly skilled seafarers.

“Common sense should prevail and they should seek asylum here in Australia,” he told Sky News.

“What I would certainly hope is that those particular asylum seekers do seek asylum in Australia rather than continue on their journey to New Zealand.”

The group of 10 Chinese nationals reportedly left Malaysia on a yacht in March, heading for New Zealand. They were picked up in Australian waters when they put out a distress call.

Immigration department officials met some members in Darwin while they refuelled and restocked to continue their journey.

The coalition advocates offshore processing of asylum seekers, temporary protection visas and turning the boats back but in the case of this group, their view is in step with that of the Greens.

Mr Keenan said the group faced great risk if they continued their voyage.

“We have seen what can happen when a vessel on its way to Australia sinks or runs into that sort of trouble,” he said.

“If they do seek asylum in Australia they will be processed in the normal way.”
