If you had $31,695 to burn, would it cause you to look mournfully at your trusty but ageing digital camera and think, “Time for an upgrade,” before handing the wad of cash over to a sales representative for Leica’s new M9-P camera? No, thought not. Perhaps that’s why the company has only made 50 of them.
The 18-megapixel full-frame beauty has an aluminum finish with some parts covered in white leather, and comes with a faster-than-fast 50mm f/0.95 lens. If shot wide open, “razor thin” will not be able to adequately describe the depth of field we’re talking about here.
At $31,700, it’s possible some buyers of the limited-edition device will never actually take a picture with it, too afraid they might drop it, lose it, or worse, have it wrestled from their hands by someone with an eye for easy-to-grab, highly valuable tech.
It’s also possible that purchasers of a piece of kit like this might not be camera or photography enthusiasts at all, instead treating it as an investment.
If you’re happy to go with the black version of the M9-P, you’ll be able to save yourself almost $24,000 in the process. Introduced to the market last year, the non-white model sells for a more affordable (but still too darn expensive) $8,000.
Oh, and if you really must have the pricier of the two devices, you’ll need to fly to Japan to get it, adding another goodness-knows-how-many-dollars to its cost.
