Leica camera sets world auction record

An anonymous bidder bought the camera which was one of the 25 models created in 1923 as a prototype for Leica A, the first commercially successful compact camera to use 35mm film.

Only 12 of the “null-serie”, or 0-Series, are known to have survived.

The previous record was also held by a 0-Series Leica which fetched 1.32m euros in 2007.

Leica is a German camera manufacturer which was founded in 1849 and introduced its 0-Series cameras in 1925. Notable for its collapsible lens, about 90,000 Leica cameras were in use by the year 1932.

Based in Solms, Germany, the company is still known as a leading camera manufacturer.
