Leadership fight looms as heads counted

Government MPs are starting to take sides as a showdown between Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her old boss Kevin Rudd appears inevitable.

Mr Rudd declared he was a changed man before jetting off overseas amid mounting speculation of a leadership spill within weeks sparked by a video posted on YouTube showing him becoming frustrated and swearing.

The day’s events triggered messages of support for Ms Gillard from Victoria’s MP for McEwen, Rob Mitchell, and NSW senator Matt Thistlethwaite.

Mr Mitchell tweeted: “Big reforms mean hard decisions, that requires strong leadership and our loyalty to be achieved.” Senator Thistlethwaite tweeted: “We have a big reform agenda. To see it through we need stability, consistency, and loyalty from all members.”

Outgoing Victorian Labor backbencher Steve Gibbons described Mr Rudd as a “prima donna” and a “psychopath with a giant ego”.

In the Rudd camp, Victorian backbencher Darren Cheeseman, who holds the most marginal seat in Australia, Corangamite, warned the party that Ms Gillard’s leadership was “terminal”.

“Julia Gillard cannot take us to an election,” he told Fairfax Media.

The Australian newspaper has done a headcount and reckons Ms Gillard has 51 MPs backing her, 31 for Mr Rudd and another 21 undecided.

On those numbers both camps are short of a majority and will need to coax and court the MPs who have not made up their minds.
