Lawyer says govt putting lives at risk

The latest asylum seeker boat disaster shows that government policies are putting lives at risk, a prominent human rights lawyer says.

George Newhouse, who heads the social justice practice for Shine Lawyers, said he had seen the suffering of the survivors and the relatives of SIEV 221 disaster at Christmas Island in December 2010.

“The latest boat accident north of Christmas Island proves that Australian government policies are putting people’s lives at risk,” he said in a statement.

“The substantial penalties for people smuggling mean that the smugglers often hire stooges, usually untrained fishermen, many of them children, to skipper the boats. The people smugglers use them as cannon fodder.”

Mr Newhouse said to make matters worse, the government’s policy of confiscating boats meant that vessels used to transport asylum seekers were often unseaworthy, with disastrous results.

“In December 2010 we saw the worst Australian shipping disaster in living memory when the engine broke down on SIEV 221 and the young unskilled crew had no idea what they were doing or where they were going,” he said.

“There is an urgent need for policy reform to ensure that politics are not putting people’s lives at risk.”
