Laura, who aims to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the world
single-handed, is still crossing the Atlantic headed for the Dutch Caribbean
island of Sint Maarten where she will complete her journey.
In 2009, when she first announced her plans to circumnavigate the globe, Dutch
social workers intervened after a tip off from the British police following
her solo-voyage across the North Sea to Lowestoft. Dutch child welfare
authorities brought the case to court and a judge ruled that the 14-year-old
was too young to sail alone.
Miss Dekker then ran away and took a plane to Sint Maarten, where she was
arrested and sent back to the Netherlands. In July last, a child court judge
gave her permission to start the voyage on condition continued her education
via an online teaching programme.
