Latvian Independence Day – November 18

The Canada of Europe, Latvia, larger than The Netherlands and Belgium combined, has 12,000 rivers, and 3,000 lakes. Sigulda, a bus ride from Riga, is otherwise known as Little Switzerland.

Cesis, a few bus stops further on, was the genesis of Latvia’s national flag, the oldest flag in Europe. Riga for several years was home to various great musicians. In Riga, Richard Wagner set out his opera, Rienzi. The theme was likely inspired by Turaida castle at Sigulda. This opera inspired the young Adolf Hitler, in 1905, to follow the example of Rienzi, the Roman tribune. The rest is history and history is what Latvia is; Europe’s anchor nation.

Every five years, Latvia puts on what is undeniably the greatest show on earth.  This year is the X1 Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Festival.  It takes place between 6 and 12 July. God Bless Latvia.
