The federal government’s popularity with the electorate continues to languish at record lows, despite it giving away billions of dollars ahead of the carbon tax, the latest Newspoll shows.
The belief that people have stopped listening seems to be confirmed yet again in the Newspoll, which shows voter support is virtually unchanged since the last poll two weeks ago, The Australian says.
In the latest poll, Labor’s primary support was 31 per cent, one point down from two weeks ago, while the coalition’s support slipped two points to 44 per cent, with the Greens at 14 per cent.
On a two-party preferred basis, the result is unchanged, with the coalition maintaining a commanding 54 per cent to 46 per cent advantage.
And just like two weeks ago, Labor would be wiped out if an election was held now.
As for the the individual performances of the two main party leaders, 32 per cent of voters are happy with Prime Minister Julia Gillard, which is up two points, while 58 per cent are dissatisfied, down two points.
Oppositon Leader Tony Abbott’s results are virtually identical – 32 per cent are satisfied, which is up one point, while 60 per cent are dissatisfied, down one point.
As for who would make the better prime minister, 42 per cent say Ms Gillard and 38 per cent choose Mr Abbot, which is Ms Gillard’s biggest lead since December.
