Last of UK’s ‘Big Six’ raises prices

The company said it will increase its dual fuel tariffs by an average of 3.7 percent from January 18, the Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

The price rise makes the German-owned firm the last of the UK’s Big Six energy firms to raise fuel bills this winter.

The company said the increase will add an average of £48 to a typical household bill in Britain annually.

Gas customers will see a 4.6-percent or £37-a-year price rise, while electricity customers will face a 3.7-percent or £20-a-year increase.

All of the UK’s Big Six energy suppliers have increased prices.

Energy giant SSE announced in October that it would be increasing electricity and gas prices by 8.2 percent.

British Gas also followed suit with the announcement of a 9.2-percent increase in its dual-fuel bill price.

Npower became the third British energy giant to announce costumer bill increases when it said gas and electricity prices will rise by 11.1 and 9.3 percent respectively from December 1.

Scottish Power also said that it would increase gas prices by 8.5 percent and electricity prices by 9 percent from December 6.

French-owned energy supplier in Britain (EDF) became the last company before E.ON to announce in November a price rise of 3.9 percent on its dual fuel tariffs.

According to a recent report by the National Audit Office (NAO), British households are expected to face price hikes for gas, electricity and water until 2030, with the average energy bill due to rise by more than £700.
