Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says the federal government has no answers to stop the arrival of asylum-seeker boats.
“They have effectively run up the white flag on border protection just as they’ve rolled out the red carpet to the people smugglers,” he told reporters in Adelaide on Thursday.
So far in June 14 boats, carrying more than 800 suspected asylum seekers, have been intercepted in Australian waters.
Mr Abbott said Prime Minister Julia Gillard was too proud to reinstate the proven border protection policies of the Howard government.
The opposition wants the government to reopen the offshore processing centre on Nauru and reintroduce temporary protection visas.
The government prefers the people-swap deal it negotiated with Malaysia but can’t get through parliament.
