Labor Senator backs TPVs for boat people

A Labor senator says it was a mistake to abolish temporary protection visas.

Mark Bishop has told News Limited that Labor should stop listening to minority parties like the Greens, that will never be in government.

The senator says he never had a problem with TPVs.

News Limited reports Labor MPs are urging Prime Minister Julia Gillard to consider the reintroduction of the controversial visas or even scrap the Malaysian solution if it means striking a compromise to deter boat people.

Meanwhile, the arrival yesterday of the latest two boats with a total of 108 people takes the number of arrivals in June to 1781.

Coalition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison says it’s a record number of arrivals in a single month.
