Labor, LNP and KAP fight for spotlight

Would-be premier Campbell Newman could upstage Labor’s official Queensland election campaign launch on Sunday with an announcement about his financial interests.

Day 22 of the Queensland election will be a battle for the media spotlight, as the major parties head into the final two weeks of the campaign.

Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Campbell Newman is remaining tight lipped about his “significant announcement” on national television.

But he is expected to make a commitment on what he will do, if elected Queensland premier, to address concerns about his and his family’s financial dealings that have so far marred his campaign.

A Galaxy Poll published on Saturday has Labor incumbent Kate Jones leading Mr Newman 51.5 to 48.5 per cent on a two-party preferred basis in the race for the west-Brisbane seat of Ashgrove.

But Mr Newman is standing firm on preference deals, telling Ashgrove residents to “just vote one”.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard will join Premier Anna Bligh at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition centre on Sunday.

After last week losing a legal battle over ballot papers that threatened to delay the March 24 poll, Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) will launch its official election campaign on Sunday in Townsville.
