Labor launch focuses on LNP, education

Premier Anna Bligh has launched Labor’s Queensland election campaign with a warning to voters about the opposition’s “lucky dip leadership”.

Ms Bligh devoted the first half of her speech in Brisbane on Sunday to the threat posed by Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Campbell Newman.

“We are in the fight of our lives,” she told about 600 guests.

Ms Bligh said a poll in the must-win seat of Ashgrove showing Labor MP Kate Jones nudging out Mr Newman, had cast doubt over who her real opponent was.

“We know that this is a contest between me and Campbell Newman,” she said.

“But it’s also between me and Jeff Seeney, and me and Lawrence Springborg, and me and Tim Nicholls.

“For all we know it’s a competition between me and Bruce Flegg.”

Ms Bligh described Mr Newman’s refusal to say who will be premier if the party wins government but he’s beaten in Ashgrove, as “lucky dip leadership”.

In another jibe at Mr Newman, Ms Bligh said Labor would require all political donations over $1000 to be reported to the electoral commission within 48 hours.

She said Mr Newman’s announcement on Sunday morning that he and his wife Lisa would relinquish all ties to their family’s businesses if he became premier was “too little, too late”.

“It is not about what he might do with his family company interests in the future, it’s about what he’s already done,” Ms Bligh said.

Meanwhile, Mrs Bligh announced incentives for employers to put on and retain apprentices.

Also, year 10 and 11 students would be able to participate in a government-funded one semester exchange to the Asia Pacific region.

Ms Bligh also announced a re-elected Labor government would go further than the LNP on freezing vehicle registration for the next term of government.

“We won’t be penalising people who drive a ute and we won’t be penalising you if you ride a motorbike,” she said.
