The extent of Labor’s Queensland election rout has been confirmed, as the party turns its attention to preventing further shrinkage at the South Brisbane by-election later this month.
Labor’s Bulimba candidate Di Farmer conceded defeat to the Liberal National Party’s Aaron Dillaway on Friday, following a recount of votes in the eastern Brisbane electorate.
The Bulimba win gives the LNP 78 of the state’s 89 seats, leaving Labor with just seven MPs.
Katter’s Australian Party will have two seats and there will be two independents.
Labor leader Annastacia Palaszczuk acknowledged the result was a further blow.
“Di Farmer was a great local member, so we are obviously disappointed with the result,” she said in a statement to AAP.
“But we are determined to get on with the job of opposition.”
Mr Dillaway, who was the LNP’s candidate for Ashgrove before standing aside for party leader Campbell Newman, said he’d been informed the result would not be formally declared until next week.
Labor’s relatively tiny representation in parliament will be further reduced if it fails to keep the seat of South Brisbane at a by-election on April 28.
The party’s candidate, Jackie Trad, said she was ready for the fight.
“I know there is a very tough road ahead for the Labor party in Queensland. However I have never been afraid of hard work and in doing what I believe is right,” she said in a statement.
The LNP candidate is Clem Grehan. Jo Bragg will stand for the Greens.
