LA puts up $1-million reward for Dorner

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Police Chief Charlie Beck set the reward on Sunday in an attempt to arrest and capture former LAPD Officer and US Navy reservist Christopher Dorner.

On February 7, Dorner allegedly shot at two police officers and grazed one of them in the city of Corona, east of Los Angeles. The suspect also killed a policeman and wounded another in an ambush on their patrol car in the town of Riverside, about 20 kilometers (13 miles) from Corona, a few hours later.

Dorner is also suspected of killing a 28-year-old daughter of a retired LAPD captain and her fiancé on February 3 in the city of Irvine, Orange County.

The former LAPD officer was fired in 2008.

In a manifesto on social media, Dorner stated that he had been a victim of racism from police colleagues and was wrongly terminated from the department in 2008. He has promised to wage “unconventional and asymmetrical warfare” on police officers and their families as revenge.

The reward is the largest sum ever offered in Southern California in a criminal investigation.

Beck described the manhunt as the most extensive ever in the Los Angeles.

The search for Dorner is focused in San Bernardino Mountains, northeast of Los Angeles. His burnt pickup truck was found abandoned in the area on February 7.

US law enforcement officials have chased numerous unconfirmed sightings and dead-end leads, including shooting and wounding two women when they were delivering newspapers in a pickup, which officers thought resembled Dorner’s vehicle.
