“The Syrian crisis has devastated the country, killed more than 210,000 people and displaced some 12 million others in and outside the country, who are living in harsh conditions,” Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said at a UN donors’ conference in Kuwait City.
Representatives of 78 countries gathered in Kuwait City on Tuesday for a conference aimed at raising funds for UN relief assistance for the Syrian people.
Tuesday’s donors’ conference is the third to be organized in Kuwait on the Syria crisis.
The Kuwaiti emir said the protracted crisis in Syria had deprived two million Syrian children of the right to education.
The emir urged UN Security Council (UNSC) member states to “put their differences aside and solve the destructive conflict in Syria,” which has now entered its fifth year.
“The crisis has encouraged terrorist groups to flourish in this unstable environment,” he said.
During the conference, United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of International Cooperation and Development Sheikha Lubna al-Qasimi pledged $100 million in additional aid to the Syrian people, while a Saudi envoy pledged $60 million from his country.
U.S. Ambassador to the UN Samantha Powers, for her part, announced $507 million in aid relief for internally displaced Syrians and Syrian refugees in neighboring countries.
The European Union pledged $500 million at the conference, while Britain pledged $150 million.
