North and South Korea have agreed to hold a planned reunion of families divided by the Korean War, Seoul says after the second round of high-level talks ended in a border village.
South Korean officials said Friday that both countries have reached an agreement to hold the families’ reunion as planned for later this month. This is while Pyongyang had earlier threatened to cancel the reunion plan in protest at an upcoming joint drill by South Korea and the US.
“South and North Korea agreed to hold the reunion of separated families as scheduled,” South Korea’s chief delegate to high-level talks with the North Kim Kyou-Hyun told reporters.
The delegations from both sides ended the second round of high-level talks at the border village of Panmunjom on Friday after little progress was made at earlier negotiations.
The first round of talks, which were their highest-level in years, was held at Panmunjom on Wednesday. South Korean officials said on Thursday that little progress was made during the talks on February 12 as Pyongyang demanded that Seoul delay a planned joint military drill with the United States until the end of scheduled Korean family reunions.
North Korea has repeatedly warned against the joint military exercise, seeing it as the main setback to the resumption of the reunions.
Last August, Pyongyang canceled a family reunion event for families separated by the Korean War, four days before it was scheduled to be held, citing “hostility” from Seoul.
The first reunion event was held in 2000 while the last session was in 2010.
