Knifepoint robberies soar by 9% in UK

The total number, including those involving in knives, rose three percent, while there was also an eight percent hike in muggings and street robberies in 2011, British media reported.

New crime figures also reveal alarming increases in muggings, theft and pickpocketing.

According to reports, overall crime fell but there was a ten percent rise in pickpocketing and theft from the person.

It comes as separate figures in the Crime Survey for England and Wales show a 13 percent rise in theft and robberies last year. That survey also showed a five percent rise in violent crime.

But police figures showed a seven percent drop. Association of Chief Police Officers Deputy Chief Constable Douglas Paxton welcomed the fall in overall crime.

But, he added that there have been increases in opportunistic thefts and robberies.

“Today’s figures show overall crime is stable but there are variations between offences and police force areas, and crime remains too high”, said policing minister Nick Herbert.

“From November police and crime commissioners will be elected with a mission to drive down crime”, he said.

Shadow police minister David Hanson said: “The government is cutting over 16,000 officers, removing crucial powers for police in their use of DNA and making it harder for communities to install CCTV.”
