Police have fired non-lethal bean bag rounds to help end a four-and-a-half hour siege in Perth’s Kings Park.
The drama began about 1pm (WST) on Thursday when they became aware a 50-year-old man parked in a carpark in a Hyundai hatchback had a barbecue gas bottle and a cigarette lighter.
“It is understood the man arrived at the carpark together with his elderly father, in an agitated state,” they later said. The man’s father got out of the car before officers arrived.
They negotiated with the man, from Joondalup in the city’s northern suburbs, while part of the park was cordoned off to the public.
The man started driving away about 5.30pm but was “intercepted” by Tactical Response Group vehicles.
“Less than lethal force options, known as bean bag rounds, were used against the vehicle during the short pursuit and the vehicle crashed harmlessly into a garden bed,” police said.
“The most important thing was preventing the vehicle and its occupant getting away and endangering the public.”
The man was taken into custody and sent to hospital for treatment for a minor facial injury.
