Killers of homeless US man in court

The hearing, which is to continue on Tuesday, is expected to determine whether there’s enough evidence to order the two police officers involved in the killing to stand trial.

Police Officer Manuel Ramos, charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, faces a maximum of 15 years to life if found guilty and Corporal Jay Cicinelli, faces up to four years behind bars if convicted.

On July 5, 2011, the officers beat 37-year-old Kelly Thomas beyond recognition, broke several of his ribs and crushed his thorax, which led to his death in hospital five days later.

Prosecutors say the beating of Thomas began after officers responded to reports that a homeless person was looking into cars and stealing some properties.

The Orange County district attorney, Tony Rackauckas, did not bring any charges against four other policemen involved in the incident due to what he called lack of evidence.

During the court hearing, photos of Thomas’s bruised and bloodied face as well as photos of minor scrapes and cuts officers sustained during the beating were displayed.

A 33-minute video of the violence and the beating up, taken by a bystander, was also shown to the public for the first time, provoking the sentiments of the audience.

The killing of Thomas triggered angry protests throughout the streets of Fullerton with demonstrators condemning police brutality in their community.

“Police brutality and use of excessive force has been one of the central themes of Amnesty International’s campaign on human rights violations in the USA,” an Amnesty report said.

Fullerton is located south of Los Angeles, in the historically-conservative area of Orange County.
