THEY are hip to pop culture, free with the treats and relish being the favourite family figure.


Modern grandparents are keeping up with their grandkids’ world, with two-thirds watching popular TV programs and a quarter also boasting their own Facebook account.

Even visiting the grandparents is more fun – with 57 per cent of parents admitting their children have fewer rules when under their grandparents’ care.

Kids are also five times more likely to be given special treats, according to research commissioned by 20th Century Fox to compare Australian grandparents to those in the movie Parental Guidance.

Rochelle McDonald of Kellyville said her four children idolise her mother, Pam.

“My mum is hip and happening,” she said. “Mum is number one in the rankings most nights and I am number five, just in front of the dog.”

“Mammas” as the kids call their grandmother, even knows who One Direction are. ” I don’t know any of their songs but I know what they all look like,” Mrs McDonald said.

“You know what the kids are interested in and you take an interest. You have more patience than you did with your own kids and I get to do more with them.”s because I have more time.”
