Kidnapped UK aid man killed in Pakistan

Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Sunday that British charity worker Khalil Dale has been killed in Pakistan after being kidnapped in January, local media reported.

According to reports the 60-year-old Dale was managing an ICRC health program in the Pakistani city of Quetta when he was kidnapped in January.

His body was found beheaded on the outskirts of the city. Local police said that Dale’s body was found in an orchard, with a note attached saying that he was killed because no ransom was paid to his captors.

Safdar Hussain, a doctor who examined the aid worker’s body, said that his throat had been slit.

“A sharp knife was used to sever his head from the body,” Hussain told the Reuters news agency. “He was killed about 12 hours ago.”

The ICRC appealed to the Pakistani media not to broadcast a video of the execution of the kidnapped aid worker, which his killers have threatened to release.

Officials in Quetta said a note had been left with his corpse saying: “This is the body of Khalil who we have slaughtered for not paying a ransom”.

It also said a video of the moment Dale’s throat was cut would soon be released.

Pakistan’s high commissioner to the UK, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, condemned the “terrible, horrendous and barbaric act”. Authorities were having to deal with “faceless killers”, he said.

“We are investigating because these things happen in that area. We are trying to find out who they actually are, whether they are Pakistani Taliban or Afghani Taliban.

They could be anybody because the game has become so murky in that area,” Hasan said.

Dale, who was awarded an MBE for his humanitarian work overseas, changed his name from Ken when he became a Muslim.

Khalil had previously worked in Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. He was formerly known as Ken Dale, before he converted to Islam.
