With iOS 6 Apple is dropping Google Maps from the iPhone and consequently removing public transportation maps from the built-in maps application on the handset as well.
Intrigal for many city-dwellers to get around, the company OpenPlans has started a Kickstarter project to help fund a solution.
Called OpenTripPlanner, the open-source application will offer a number of features that were not available in Google Maps. Directions can be made using different transit methods –- such as walking, biking, public transit and bike-share – and will find the fastest and efficient way to your destination.
OpenTripPlanner will be initially available in North America, and will include information from any transit agency that provides its data in GTFS format (the same format used by Google Maps). The group also hopes to expand coverage to other parts of the world.
