In this bizarre leadership tussle, Mr Rudd is appealing to his biggest support
base – the public – as Ms Gillard and her backers try to remind their party
colleagues of the experience of serving under the Rudd Government.
With the challenge now in the open, this tension that has riven the party for
years has finally been unleashed into the public. Mr Rudd said today his
supporters believe he can “save” the party from an electoral
wipeout.
A Gillard supporter, Nicola Roxon, claimed that he had been a terrible leader
and described as fanciful the idea that “Kevin is a Messiah”. On
current polling, however, he appears to be the party’s better hope.
