Mr Nazarbayev, who has ruled since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991,
switched the Kazakh capital to Astana from Almaty in 1998.
Astana, which lies on the windswept steppe, has since become Mr Nazarbayev’s
pet project and new, ornate buildings rise up into the city’s skyline every
year.
