The riot and the deaths dented Kazakhstan’s reputation for stability and
infuriated Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Temirov’s trial was the first in a series of sensitive trials in Aktau linked
to the riot. The trial of 37 people accused of inciting the violence and a
separate trial of five police officers accused of using excessive force
during the riot are due to end within weeks.
