Kayakers rescued in NSW

A man and two children have been plucked to safety after their kayaks capsized in big seas off the NSW south coast.

The three family members ran into trouble off Moruya about 2.30pm (AEDT) on Tuesday when rough seas tossed them out of their kayaks.

After a widespread search, an eight-year-old girl was winched to safety by a rescue helicopter.

A 10-year-old boy and his 40-year-old father were picked up by surf lifesavers soon after.

All three are being treated at the scene by ambulance officers.

Andrew Edmunds, the Surf Life Saving Association’s far south coast life-saving director, said none of the trio had been wearing lifejackets.

Beaches on the south coast have been closed since Monday because of hazardous conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts dangerous surf conditions and large swells to continue through Tuesday evening.
