Katter’s brother makes gay marriage ad

Bob Katter’s gay half brother will star in a TV advertisement promotes same-sex marriage.

Carl Katter says the advertisement, titled End Marriage Discrimination, is a response to the controversial commercial from Katter’s Australian Party.

That ad was meant to highlight the Liberal National Party leader’s personal support for gay marriage.

It was condemned as homophobic by gay and lesbian groups and the leaders of both major Queensland political parties.

It was also blamed for sparking a homophobic and racist graffiti attack on a Queensland minister’s office.

After speaking out against the commercial on Monday, Carl Katter says he felt compelled to make a new advertisement with the activist group GetUp.

“It was sad, it was sick and I knew somebody had to respond,” he said in a statement.

Mr Katter says his brother’s advertisement seemed designed to make gay people feel inferior.

“My brother talks about family values. Well, I’m here to tell him that hate is not a family value,” he said.

The commercial will be launched in Brisbane on Wednesday and is to be screened in the lead-up to the state election.
