Katter Party wins two Qld seats

Katter’s Australian Party has won two seats in its inaugural election, the ABC says.

The party won Mount Isa and retained the seat of Dalrymple, according to ABC election analyst Antony Green.

Mr Green said Liberal National Party defector Shane Knuth would easily hold Dalrymple.

“He will be easily returned,” Mr Green said.

Party founder Bob Katter’s son Rob will become the third generation of his family to become a member of parliament, Mr Green said.

Mr Green said Australian Party leader Aidan McLindon, who also defected from the LNP, failed to hold the Beaudesert electorate.

Mr McLindon said the party had performed outstandingly with many of its candidates polling better than Labor candidates.

“That in itself says the old school Labor party is being replaced, but also the National/Country party is in the transformation of being replaced,” Mr McLindon told Sky News.

“We’re on the threshold of a new era of politics and I think the federal government is the war and tonight was just the battle.”

Mr McLindon hinted he would stand for the Senate as an Australia Party candidate.

“I am proud to stand by Bob Katter tonight. I’d rather lose as an Australia Party candidate and stand for something than win as an LNP candidate and stand for nothing,” he said when asked on Sky if he would stand for the Senate.

“This is just the beginning of a very long chapter in the Australia Party and I look forward to assisting the party in any way, shape or form I can to ensure its success in the future.”

He said Saturday’s election result was less a vote for the LNP and more a vote against the ALP.

“It’s been a referendum on the popularity of a Bligh Labor government.”
