Katter meeting to draw diverse crowd

A country music singer, a Sydney shock jock and a prominent green activist are tipped to appear at the first convention of maverick MP Bob Katter’s party in Brisbane.

The Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) gathering will bring together a diverse range of supporters weeks out from a state poll in which the party is backing itself to finish strongly.

Talkback presenter Alan Jones is expected to appear by video link to introduce a speech from KAP state leader Aidan McLindon, who is vying for the seat of Beaudesert.

Green activist and Lock the Gate president Drew Hutton is also tipped to appear at the gathering.

Both have sided with Katter’s Australian Party in opposing the expansion of coal seam gas mining in Queensland.

Organisers say another high-profile supporter, country singer James Blundell, will perform the party’s campaign song.

Mr Katter will deliver the keynote address.

A KAP spokesman says the gathering will discuss policies including introducing a moratorium on coal seam gas mining, boosting manufacturing and removing “unnecessary restrictions” on Queenslanders.
