The pro- independence group known as Hurryat Conference has called on people to remember those who lost their lives during protests on the ‘Martyrs’ Week’ starting on June 11.
“Unfortunately India is suffering from arrogance of power and the expansionism part of their policy. They are not sincere to resolve the dispute according to the historical background on Kashmir,” Hurryat Conference’s Syed Ali Shah Geelani says.
Business offices, government buildings, and shops have been closed down to remember those who lost their lives in the mass protests triggered by the killing of a school boy.
In 2010, Kashmir witnessed a wave of protests, with demonstrators calling for independence from Indian rule.
Strict curfews were imposed on the people of Kashmir in attempt to prevent protesters from taking to the streets.
Although the Indian government vowed to carry out investigations, activists say no action has been taken.
“One thing which is similar from the government’s side is violence, and the other is impunity. They have never punished anybody, whether it be the cases in 2010 or 1990…” human rights activist Khurram Parvez said.
Thousands of people have been killed since the unrest in Kashmir began two decades ago.
