Karzai urges US pullback after carnage

During a meeting with visiting US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in Kabul on Thursday, Karzai said, “Both sides (Afghan government and the US) should work together for a security handover from international forces to Afghan troops to take place by 2013 instead of 2014.”

“The Afghan government is ready to take overall security responsibility,” he pointed out.

The remarks come as public fury continues in war-torn Afghanistan over a shooting rampage by a US soldier that killed 16 Afghan civilians.

On Monday, Panetta expressed regret over the incident, saying the soldier responsible for the massacre would be brought to justice under the US military legal code.

On Tuesday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also called for the punishment of those involved in the recent massacre of Afghan civilians.

US President Barack Obama pledged a thorough investigation into the killings.

The latest string of incidents has further strained relations between Washington and Kabul.

Anti-American sentiments in Afghanistan have also risen due to the desecration of the Holy Qur’an in a US military air base last month.

The US-led invasion of Afghanistan was launched in 2001 under the pretext of removing the Taliban from power; however, insecurity has been growing across the country, despite the presence there of tens of thousands of US-led forces.
