Karzai slammed Washington for not transferring some 600 inmates over to Afghan control, about a week after the prison was handed over to Afghanistan.
“Delay in the handing over of prisoners after September 9th is a serious violation of the agreement signed between Afghanistan and the United States,” the Afghan president said in a statement on Sunday.
NATO says that a total of 634 prisoners captured after the initial agreement between US and Afghanistan was signed, are to remain in US custody.
On September 10, the United States officially handed over the Bagram military prison to Afghan authorities.
“The people of Afghanistan consider prisons and the detention of Afghans to be an issue related to their national sovereignty and this has been repeatedly mentioned in the strategic partnership agreement between the two countries,” the statement added.
The Bagram airbase prison, now called the Parwan Detention Center, holds over 3,000 prisoners.
The transfer came six months after Washington and Kabul signed a deal in which the US consented to give control of the Bagram Detention Center in the northeastern province of Parwan to Afghan forces.
The US invaded Afghanistan in 200. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continue to rise across Afghanistan, despite the presence of about 130,000 US-led troops.
