Karzai seeks Pakistan’s help for peace

The Afghan president flew into Islamabad on Thursday to attend a two-day tripartite summit, which will open on Friday with the participation of his Iranian and Pakistani counterparts.

The summit meeting will be followed by a joint news conference, Pakistan government officials said.

The Islamabad summit comes at a time when peace talks with the Taliban seems to be gaining momentum.

Karzai admitted in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published on Thursday that talks between the United States, the Afghan government and the Taliban had taken place in the past month.

However, a Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, denied Karzai’s comments.

“The Taliban did not talk with the Kabul government anywhere,” Mujahid said in a statement.

Pakistan is considered a major player in any peace effort with the Taliban because of its traditional relations with the group. Observers say that Islamabad can either help to bring the militants to the table or frustrate any peace bid.

In Islamabad, Karzai held separate meetings with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and discussed ways to expand relations, economic ties and cooperation.

Karzai’s trip comes weeks after the US acknowledged that it has held discussions about opening a Taliban liaison office in Qatar.

According to media reports, top US officials have reportedly held several rounds of secret talks with the militant group.

The talks are part of Washington’s strategy of withdrawing troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
