Karzai condemns deadly US-led raid

President Karzai described the attack as “unacceptable,” saying he would cut short a trip to China to return home to hear an assessment about the Wednesday pre-down airstrike by US-led forces in Logar province.

“Attacks by NATO that cause life and property losses to civilians under no circumstances could be justified and are not acceptable,” Karzai’s office quoted him as saying in Chinese capital Beijing on Thursday.

Afghan officials and residents said the nighttime attack targeted civilians celebrating a wedding in Baraki Barak district of Logar province. Five women and seven children were among the victims.

Mohammad Wali, the head of the local council of Sajawand village, said that several families were attending a wedding ceremony when the US-led forces bombarded the house at about 1 a.m.

“The house is completely destroyed. Everyone is shoveling to try to get the bodies out. Some of the bodies have no legs, no hands,” Wali said.

Overnight operations by the US-led forces have resulted in civilian casualties and increasing tension between Washington and Kabul.

The Afghan government says the foreign forces put civilians in the crossfire but the alliance claims such operations are important in capturing and killing Taliban militants.
