KAP pledges to scrap Brisbane light rail

Katter’s Australian Party has promised to scrap the $8 billion Brisbane light rail project and instead spend the money on major road projects in rural Queensland.

At the Australian Party’s election campaign launch in Townsville on Sunday, state leader Aidan McLindon said the light rail project should not be built.

“We are the most decentralised state in the nation, and it only makes sense that we have to empower the communities outside of Brisbane so that Brisbane has a win and that Queensland’s communities have a win,” Mr McLindon said.

The money would be spent on upgrading the Bruce Highway, constructing the Toowoomba range bypass and a link road between the Sunshine Coast and South Burnett.

Mr McLindon also unveiled plans to reinstate the Queensland state bank, create a mandated ethanol industry and fast track mining projects.

Earlier on Sunday, KAP spokesman Scott Barrett told AAP that billionaire James Packer’s $250,000 donation would not buy him political influence.

“The Packers have known Bob Katter for many years, so they know what they’re getting,” Mr Barrett said.

“They know that he’s not easily swayed.

“Just because he’s contributed in this way doesn’t mean he’s going to pull the reins.”

A spokesman for the party told AAP the funds from Mr Packer would not be used on the Queensland election campaign because of the state’s electoral laws.
