He claimed at the time to have been a passenger hitching a ride with a man who
had deliberately run over a pedestrian, before stopping the car and then
attacking a woman on foot.
That was when McGillvary intervened with the use of his hatchet.
McGillvary had cut his hair in an attempt to alter his distinctive appearance
but was picked up regardless. His bail has been set at $3 million.
