Ophir Ben-Shetreet |
(Scroll down for video) A 17-year-old Orthodox Jewish girl, has caused controversy after she chose to sing on a talent show.
Dressed in her yellow jumper which covered her knees and long sleeves which cover her elbows, this sweet Jewish girl named Ophir Ben-Shetreet, performed on the Israeli talent show “The Voice”, which is equivalent to the U.S. show “American Idol.”
Ben-Shetreet wowed the judges and the crowed with her singing. She truly did a phenomenal job. But when she came back to her hometown of Nir Galim, a religious community near Ashdod, people were not so accepting. Many people thought it was inappropriate for an Orthodox Jewish girl to sing in public, on TV and especially in front of men. Parents from the school complained, which ultimately led to Ben-Shetreet being punished.
Ben-Shetreet who is currently in the 12th grade was suspended from her religious school for two weeks. The School also demanded that she attend classes on Jewish law.
The community rabbi, Rabbi Zvi Arnon, said he understood the situation of Ben-Shetreet and praised her for being “a girl with strong morals,” but reiterated that according to some Orthodox Jews,
Jewish law prohibits her from singing before men.
“Not a single rabbi would permit a woman to sing
in front of men, especially on television. It’s simply not permitted by Jewish law,” her community rabbi claimed.
Ben-Shetreet will continue singing on the show despite oppositions from her community.
Ben-Shetreet blew away the judges with her incredible voice. They called her voice clear, clean, pure, angelic and proceeded to fight for the opportunity to be her mentor throughout the competition. She ended up choosing rockstar Aviv Geffen as her mentor.
