NEW YORK (AP) — Jury selection has started in the New York City murder trial of a once-rising rapper.
G. Dep reopened a nearly 20-year-old case by walking into a police station in December 2010 and saying he was the gunman. Jury selection started Monday.
G. Dep, born Trevell Coleman, has acknowledged confessing to the 1993 shooting but has pleaded not guilty.
His lawyer has suggested he may focus on the effects that years of drug use had on the rapper’s admission.
The victim, John Henkel, was killed on a Harlem street. Detectives matched Henkel’s death to the rapper’s account of trying to mug a stranger and shooting him.
G. Dep got attention with “Special Delivery” and “Let’s Get It” in the early 2000s, but the spotlight on him faded.
