Lawyer Julian Burnside has been urged to apologise to child sex abuse victims after appearing to describe the Opposition’s Tony Abbott as a paedophile.
The prominent QC apologised to Mr Abbott after tweeting “Paedos in speedos” yesterday – saying he did not believe Mr Abbott was a paedophile.
But child protection expert Bernadette McMenamin said that was not enough and Mr Burnside should say sorry to victims everywhere for trivialising the subject of child abuse.
“The worst thing you can relate someone to is a sex offender,” Ms McMenamin, the chief executive of Child Wise, said.
“Somebody in his position of credibility and respect should apologise to all victims, not just Tony Abbott.”
Mr Burnside’s bizarre remark came during discussion of a new book about Mr Abbott, conducted via the social networking site Twitter.
After a series of posts describing Mr Abbott as “truly dangerous” and “unprincipled”, the QC posted: “Paedos in speedos”.
A Twitter newcomer, Mr Burnside later posted that he was referring to “p.priests”, not the Opposition Leader.
“This is unprompted apology to #Abbott. He is NOT a paedophile and I was not referring to him. He has many flaws but that is not one of them,” he wrote.
Mr Burnside told the Herald Sun he thought he had been replying to an unrelated text message from just one person, not broadcasting to thousands of Twitter followers.
“It’s all a big mistake,” he said.”I have already sent an unsolicited apology. I do not believe he is a paedophile.
“I thought I was responding one-on-one to a text from a person who raised a sort of pun.”
Mr Burnside said the pun in question was drawn from a BBC comedy program. British sketch show That Mitchell and Webb Look is known to joke about “paedos in Speedos”.
Mr Burnside said he understood how his use of the expression could be interpreted, but said the error should not overshadow his criticisms of Mr Abbott.
The blunder came as part of tweets about a new book on Mr Abbott, titled Tony Abbott: A Man’s Man, by academic Susan Mitchell.
In his posts, Mr Burnside described Mr Abbott as a “dangerous man with no moral compass” who would lead Australia “back to the dark ages”. He said the book was “a terrifying portrait of a truly dangerous, unprincipled person: a liar and a hypocrite”.
Mr Abbott declined to comment on any of Mr Burnside’s remarks.

I was not “urged” to apologise. I apologised immediately I saw what had happened. I thought I had replied to a message, one to one. the message was a weak pun about pedophile priests, i replied with a weak pun from a BBC comedy show. When I saw that my reply was tweeted to the universe, I immediately explained that it was not about Abbott. The person whose message I replied to has since emailed me: she lives in London and had never heard of Abbott. She was not talking about him, neither was I.
The zionist Government propaganda Media machine strikes again..
Julian, how many times have those abc and other TV channel skit shows talked about Tony Abbott looking like a peadophile in his speedos, yet you are the only one to be talked about… even when your reply on twitter had nothing to do with anything related to Tony Abbott.
