Joseph Briggs, Chicago 16-Year-Old, Fatally Shot While Standing On Porch

A 16-year-old boy shot in the head while standing on the porch in front of his family’s home Saturday evening died early Sunday.

Joseph Briggs, of the 6100 block of South Rockwell Street, was shot around 8 p.m. Saturday, while standing with several others on his family’s porch in the city’s Chicago Lawn neighborhood, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Briggs — the only individual wounded in the incident — was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m. Police believe the shooting may have been gang-related, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

No arrests have been made in the shooting to date and an investigation is ongoing.

As of early Sunday afternoon, Briggs is one of at least five people who were fatally shot across Chicago over the weekend. At least 35 others have been wounded in separate shootings. From late Saturday into early Sunday alone, 20 people were wounded by gunfire, the Sun-Times reports.

Homicides in Chicago so far this year were up nearly 50 percent when compared to last year, as of late last month.

This is a developing story.
