John Howard enters Qld election campaign

Former prime minister John Howard will join Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Campbell Newman on the hustings in Brisbane on Thursday.

They will then attend the LNP’s QForum event together as part of Mr Newman’s campaign to win the seat of Ashgrove and ultimately for the party to win government.

The QForum events have been criticised by Labor for encouraging pay-for-access politics.

Business and industry pay between $3300 and $20,000 to attend and sponsor events, with different amounts offering different levels of access and promotional opportunities.

Earlier this month the first QForum featured former federal treasurer Peter Costello.

Premier Anna Bligh will start Thursday in Yeppoon, near Rockhampton, before heading back to Brisbane for The Courier-Mail’s The People’s Forum.

The forum, which starts at 6.45 pm (AEST), will be moderated by Sky News’ political reporter David Speers.
